Y'know, I've been waxing nostalgic of late, and I decided to make a list of things that I miss...there was a time when the below items were popular, and now they're gone!! Take a trip down memory lane and see if these reminders bring a smile to your face!!

Night Flight on USA

nightflight.jpg

Every Friday and Saturday night, USA Network played Night Flight. Night Flight was a late night variety show...music videos Mtv wouldn't touch, amateur animation (remember Bambi vs. Godzilla?), there were animated skits based on Heavy Metal. There were a lot of outrageous live action skits you would never see anywhere else. Night Flight was more than a show...it was an attitude.

Hostess Chocodiles

Chocodiles...Hostess Twinkies that were chocolate covered...what a great combination!! For whatever reason, Hostess has opted to make these in the Northeastern U.S. for many years!! Interestingly enough, you can get them on the West Coast! Jim, next time you come out...you will need to bring something here with you!!

Weaver Chicken Roll

Weaver Chicken Roll...a definite food guilty pleasure...nobody makes chicken roll anymore...Weaver was the last to make it. I remember spending weekends with my grandparents in Bristol...my grandfather always kept some around. We'd make chicken roll sandwiches with mayo and wheat bread. And, he'd cut the crust...back then, I didn't care for it. Great stuff...absolutely bad for you, and it would go bad only in a couple of days after it was sliced. I think as people became more health conscious, chicken roll was no longer a popular seller. Now, it's just plain gone.

The Morton Downey, Jr. Show

mort.jpg

Morton Downey, Jr., A.K.A. "Mort the Mouth". Mort started off with a career as a DJ and singer, and then worked his way into politics, becoming an aide to many powerful senators in the seventies. He was a favorite guest in talk shows due to his candor and honest in-your-face approach. In the late 80's WOR channel 9 in NY decided to tap him for what would be one of the most controversial talk shows of all time. It could be said that his show would be the blueprint for the talk shows of the 90s and today. However, his topics were not about sleazeball trailer trash looking for their five minutes of fame, but would be about politics and major topics of the day...most of which are still relevant. Plus, he was a verbally abusive in-your-face take no prisoners host. Always with a cigarette in his mouth, a habit which, sadly did him on March of 2001. Regular guests included the Rev. Al Sharpton (whose feud with Rep. Roy Innes came to a head on the show when Innes knocked Sharpton flat on his ass!! A great moment), feminist lawyer Gloria Allred, and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. He truly believed in the greatness of this country, and the melting pot. He was well known for telling guests to 'Zip It!', and dealing with libs by referring to them as 'Pablum Puking Liberals'. He was disgraced after he was supposedly attacked by skinheads in San Francisco in 1994. His show was canceled, and he seemed to disappear after that. He is missed.

McDonaldLand Cookies

MMMMMM...those tasty McDonaldLand cookies. Y'know, there was nothing special about them...yet they were so good!! I believe Keebler made them for McDonald's. Progress is to blame for them disappearing...McD's has opted to replace them with more 'gourmet' or 'home-made' type cookies. Total shame.

Crazy Eddie

crazy-eddie-ad2.jpg

Crazy Eddie...his prices were IN-SANE!!! Anyone who lived in the New York area in the late 70s and early 80s will remember loudmouth pitchman Jerry Carroll's outrageous TV ads for the electronics chain. Christmas in July ads where he was dressed in a Santa suit, shaking a Christmas tree in his hand. And the real Crazy Eddie? Eddie Antar went out of business, with the SEC on his tail for fraudulent business practices...he fled the country for several years, only to be caught...he tried again a few years ago to open a new store and website, with no success.

Matchbox Cars (pre-1985)

matchboxlogo.gif

Matchbox cars produced in the Lesney years (1953-1985) were some of the greatest toys ever made. Lesney's attention to detail and quality were apparent when they owned Matchbox. You can feel the difference...the Lesney die-cast cars had some weight to them...the newer ones are light...more plastics, thinner metals, etc. The wheels aren't as good now either. Mattel owns Matchbox, now...and they are trying to revive the Superfast era (1971-1985?), but I feel the Matchbox name has lost it's lustre. I still have my Matchbox collection from when I was a kid, and if I can find room here at Headquarters, they would be displayed. Someday.
